music update #9

Last week was a massive week for music with new music and announcements happening left, right and centre. It would be unwise for me to not have a little round up of them all on here, so here goes starting with the biggest news of last week. David Bowie released a new song ‘Where Are We Now?’ about his time in Berlin, quite silently on his 66th birthday, with no advertising or press releases. It appeared online with journalists, bloggers and pretty much everyone going mental about how brilliant it is. A new album is to be released in March entitled ‘The Next Day’ which was obviously massive news for Bowie fans and the song has been really well received by all and charted at number 6. The news of this has kickstarted me into doing some more musical research into Bowie’s career and back catalogue. Ashamedly for a wannabe music journo I only really know the very basics of Bowie and his iconic status so I plan on spending the next few days or weeks researching, listening and just finding out more about a man who’s music I already like but I’m sure I will love if I just dig a little bit deeper. Here is ‘Where Are We Now?’ for all those slight few of you that may not have heard it yet.

Also, other big announcements especially for the world of pop is that there will be new music from Destiny’s Child and Justin Timberlake this year. I’m particularly excited about Destiny’s Child, I must admit I really loved them when I was younger and I still listen to them know so it will be interesting to see what they will be both be releasing for us all to hear.

In terms of brand new music from brand new acts then Zane Lowe was all over that with his radio show last week. A hottest record from PEACE and a Maida Vale session from Palma Violets, both bands I love and think are destined for big things this year, were on Wednesday night. On Thursday night, the 2nd hour of Zane’s show was dedicated to new music with FutureR1, a feature that is to become a regular ever first Thursday of the month on his show from now on. There was some brilliant tracks featured some by bands/acts I’d been hearing of and some brand new to my ears stuff. It was brilliant to get that new stuff featured in such a prime time slot. Also, the week before was the ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’ takeover with DJ’s such as Huw Stephens, Annie Mac and Daniel P Carter playing new music and having that on in the daytime instead on their late night shows.

Last week I posted the soundcloud link to a new song from Thumpers, the song ‘Dancing’s Done’ as I said then really is brilliant and I like it a lot. Today the video for the track has been released so here it is for you all to watch.

Festival news: tickets for Field Day in London went on sale Friday morning and with what can only be described as a brilliant line up, tickets will be gone fast. The event that will take place on Saturday 25th May sees some of the best names in music at the moment performing. Acts such as Chvrches, Animal Collective, Disclosure, Julio Bashmore, Tim Burgess, Django Django and many more. It’s the best festival line up I have seen so far that is for sure.
