Let’s start off with the biggest musical talking point of last week, the Brits. Big winners were Ben Howard for British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act and Emeli Sande for Best Album and British Female Solo Artist. Adele also managed to finish her speech this year after winning the Best Single Award for ‘Skyfall’. It was a pretty boring awards in my opinion, there really wasn’t much happening and as usual the winners didn’t really reflect the best of last year’s music for me anyway. The best thing about it was Muse’s performance which opened the show and really it went very downhill from there.
Glastonbury have launched a new dance stage for this year’s festival, AlunaGeorge, Disclosure and NAS are all confirmed to headline it. It has had dance tents in the past but this year that is set to expand with a whole stage dedicated to dance music. This is much like the plans that Reading and Leeds had announced with new stages dedicated to dance/hip hop etc. Also, in Glastonbury news Alt-J have confirmed that they will be paying this year’s festival after the Brit awards last week.
Frank Ocean is to team up with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore on his new album. He picked up the Best International Male award at the Brits last week and revealed on Zane Lowe’s show that he already has around 10 or 11 tracks for his new record. He’s been working with Pharrell so far on the album and he also has intentions to work with Danger Mouse and King Krule on this album too. I must admit I am only just getting into the whole Frank Ocean thing, I’ve heard so much about them as I’m sure everyone has but I just didn’t understand all the hype at first but after hearing more of his stuff I can see why so much has been said about him. In terms of working with Depeche Mode I think that could be a really amazing collaboration. Depeche Mode have released a new single a couple of weeks ago which I’m really liking, here it is for you all to listen to.
Last week saw two new acts stream their debut albums online prior to their release today. Firstly, Palma Violets with ‘180’ and also Doldrums with ‘Lesser Evil’. Both albums are available to buy now and I certainly recommend that you check out both of these bands if you haven’t already.
Also, congratulations to Adele and Paul Epworth for winning the Oscar for Skyfall last night, well deserved.
As it’s nearly the end of the month, I thought I would put up in this post my February playlist. It’s some new music and mainly just stuff that I have been listening to a lot this month. I hope you all enjoy it.
