albums to look forward to: september onwards

So we are coming towards the last stretch of the year music releases wise and though 2013 has already seen some brilliant albums there is still plenty more to be excited about. Obviously, there are plenty of releases from all genres still to come but here I’ve rounded up the albums I am really excited about hearing and buying and getting to know and hopefully love over the next couple of months.

Kings of Leon – Mechanical Bull

With an extensive back catalogue of very strong and very good albums full of big rock moments and more indie ballads with that country southern feel, the 6th studio album from this Tennessee quartet is set to be yet another good one. With single ‘Supersoaker’ setting them up nicely and causing the Internet stir that only bands as big or as brilliant as KOL can, this is one of the years most highly anticipated big rock band releases.

Arctic Monkeys – AM

Their headline performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival firmly cemented them as indie/rock big guns up with the likes of Kasabian in terms of excitement over their performances, the slick live shows and consistently good albums. ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?’, ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ and ‘R U Mine’ are all classic rock influenced cuts with searing guitars and Alex Turner’s much improved vocals that swim around your ears filling your head with his dulcet Northern tones. The three singles released so far and that Glasto set has caused some serious excitement over the return of this Sheffield four piece and quite rightly, roll on the release of ‘AM’.

Gaga’s ‘Artpop’ & Perry’s Prism

Two other big releases come in the form of pop albums from two of the biggest female stars of the current decade, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The media and fans may be pinning this one as two pop heavyweights and their fight to be the best but between the pair there is no tension or hostility at all. Quite the opposite and why should there be? It’s times like these where the media thrives on ‘Who’s Best’ and ‘Who’s Winning the Chart Battle’ articles but in reality I feel both acts couldn’t care less as long as fans like their songs. They are both pop stars who reinvent themselves but from the outset it seems like ‘Artpop’ and ‘Prism’ could not be more different. Personally, I’m more excited for ‘Prism’ but I think both will satisfy the pop music market in their own way.

Release date: November 11th & October 22nd

Deaf Havana – Old Souls

After coming back with two new members and a brilliant single ‘Boston Square’ back in May this year, the third album from this Norfolk sixtet looks set to be a good one. I’ve seen Deaf Havana quite a few times on festival bills and supporting other bands and though I liked them I’ve never really listened to their stuff. With this newer, more grown up side of the band though it is something I really love. Taking a lot more inspiration from classic rock and roll and country sounds mixed in with the band’s more traditional alternative roots it is something that really works for them from the sound of the singles and is quite different to a lot of other bands out there at the moment. I really think ‘Old Souls’ is going to be the game changer for this band opening them up to a bigger audience and becoming a well respected and well known UK alt-rock band in their own right.

Chvrches – The Bones Of What You Believe

Having released quite a few singles now and receiving plenty of critical acclaim from Radio 1 DJ’s including Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens to music journos from the likes of NME, Clash and The Guardian and being all over the blogosphere, here is a band who’s debut is eagerly awaited by many. Reeling us all in with their atmospheric indie pop sound full of big drum beats, the beautiful yet slightly childlike vocals of lead singer Lauren Mayberry and the sometimes 80’s inspired and sometimes chiming electronics that segue themselves throughout everything creating something quite magical. This Glasgow trio look set to cement their place in the rich Scottish music scene having racked up plenty of followers online, plenty of plays on Soundcloud and all that from the band who came 5th on this year’s BBC Sound of list, pretty good going from the last few months really.

Haim – Days Are Gone

Surely Haim’s debut album is one of the most anticipated in a long time, the hype surrounding these girls is extremely well deserved with amazing retro tinged indie guitar tracks. This trio of long haired Californian sisters in their forever fashionable attire of laid back chic and their positive attitudes is something that serves the girls well charming the likes of everyone they meet and every crowd they play to. Having been compared to the likes of Fleetwood Mac they are girls leading the charge of all girl rock bands and I, for one, love what they are doing. Oh how I wish I was one of the Haim sisters.

Panic! At The Disco – Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!

This one is an album I’m extremely excited about. I’ve loved Panic! for years and years and every new album they bring out surprises me in their growth of sound. Though all their back catalogue may not be an instant favourite and takes some listening to [see Pretty Odd.] their is always a brilliance and depth there to be found whether instantly obvious like their first album or it takes a bit of digging to get there. One thing this band have always been good at is writing one hell of a catchy tune that will be stuck in your head for days and that is exactly what they did with ‘Miss Jackson’ the first single to be taken from their upcoming album. Though I wasn’t initially convinced if I liked it, it was catchy as hell and after plenty of listens it is now a firm favourite that I can not stop singing. It’s been yet another long time from last album to this one and I can not wait for the return of P!ATD with this new album and their UK tour.
