Gentle yet upbeat folky guitar is the main sticking point of most of her tracks along with her quite unique and soulful vocals. With things such as tinkling piano lines, soft percussion and the sound of trumpets all making appearances in the above track it adds to what otherwise would have been a quiet affair though the guitar line is uptempo. ‘Oo Song’ in particular is a brilliant song full of melodies, a rhythm that makes you want to dance along and it truly would be a brilliant song to hear live. While her latest recording ‘Rooftops’ shows how her sound has matured slightly again focusing on a good cheery guitar line and the vocals but it is much more subtle with less instrumentation, a quiet song but with the fast storytelling vocals of Lawrence.
With the determination to make acoustic music exciting again and experience of playing as a guitarist in punk and ska bands in her teens, she has become so utterly in love with performing music live. The past experiences and array of influences has shaped where she is at now with a mix of acoustic and electric guitar that creates great sound-scapes of tracks that she has clearly spent a lot of time and energy creating. Every single track has a personal story where she takes you through all her different life experiences from love to the teenage years.
Gaining the attention of many these days after the successful livestream concert from her flat in East London which was watched by hundreds back in November 2012. Since then she has released her debut album ‘Bedroom Hero’ which peaked at #2 in the BandCamp charts, she’s toured fan’s living rooms at the beginning of 2013 before a tour of venues all around Europe as well as supporting the likes of Scouting For Girls, Ben Howar, The Civil Wars, Michael Kiwanuka and Ani Difranco who she cites as one of her idols while Difranco commented on Liz and her music saying she is “a beautiful artist who lives on the edge.”
All that has seen more coverage in media whether mainstream or not, online, the radio or magazine with Q Magazine saying; “Florence-minus-the-hollering, stomping stage routine hinting at a feisty little madam beneath the adorable, heavy fringe-adorned veneer, promising a new starlet in the making” while Fresh on the Net said “Liz Lawrence sounds like the Adele of the underground.”
Currently Liz has just released a new track ‘Rooftops’ which is taken from her forthcoming EP and you can download the track for free from her BandCamp page now. There are a few tour dates up on her website for the end of this year and I’m sure more will be added for next year with the release of her new EP on the way.
