tracks of the week #43

A 90’s band, a new discovery or two, a late 00’s throwback/potentially a one hit wonder and a new track from The Horrors. There is definitely something here for everyone from shiny indie, to shoegazey sounds to pop sensibilities. Enjoy!

Garbage – Only Happy When It Rains

I’ve spoken recently about my love of this band and how I’ve discovered more of their back catalogue recently. Though this was a track I was already aware of and had listened to a lot I think it’s taken on a different role for me when set against the rest of the album it is from, the band’s self titled debut. It contains all the elements that you would expect from a Garbage track, it’s got that grunge sensibility in the lyrics, the wonderfully lethargic yet strong tones of Shirley Manson and the deep, dirty guitar lines that juxtapose completely the echoing, swirling guitar that also runs throughout.

Kwabs – Wrong Or Right

Thanks to Lucie from Lucie’s Corner introducing post on this guy I found out about his brilliant music and I’m so glad because he is seriously brilliant! His voice for starters is just so good and full of soul and harmony. The production of his tracks comes from SOHN who has released and worked on a lot of really good tracks lately. With brilliant, laid back quick beats lying behind Kwabs vocals it gives that chilled almost R’n’B edge but does not distract at all from those excellent vocals.

Golden Silvers – True Romance

Does anybody remember this band and the track that came out in around 2008/2009? I was pretty obsessed with it and I used to play it all the time. The first year I ever went to Leeds, they played the Festival Republic tent and I went to see them mainly for this track but their whole set was actually better than I expected it to be. I assumed they were just some sort of one hit wonder indie band but their set proved otherwise to me but I guess they have turned into that now with this being the only track I really remember from them. What ever happened to them anyway? Have they broken up? Are they still playing shows?

Lux Lisbon – Bullingdon Club

This band will be featured a lot on my blog over the next couple of weeks so if you like this track then you will be in for a treat. Personally, I love this the moment I heard it I knew they were a band I needed to feature on here. The uptempo track with a completely danceable rhythm and littered with catchy melodies is just wonderful and a complete breath of fresh air at this time of year reminding you of summer days and dancing around in festival fields.

The Horrors – I See You

This brand new track from The Horrors was given it’s first play on Zane Lowe’s show a couple of weeks ago and since then I have been listening to it non stop. The band’s last album was one of my favourites of 2012, it’s just an absolute masterpiece of an album for me and one I constantly revisit. This track though slightly less mellow and shoegazey as their previous album still features some of the sounds found on there including the drawn out vocals and guitar sounds that echo all around the track. I really think that this is a brilliant follow on from the band retaining the best bits of their sound but also showing how they have grown. The band also announced that their 4th album ‘Luminous’, that this track comes from, will be released on 5th May this year. I, for one, can not wait for this, I have a feeling it’s going to be a stand out record of 2014. You can pre-order ‘Luminous’ now from the band’s website and this is definitely an album I will be pre-ordering this year.
