Today I thought I’d share with you one of my recent food discoveries in Sheffield and it is a very good one. The post is part recommendation and part review which will sort of be ongoing thing because I’m sure there will be many more visits to this place.
Homemade by Thelma’s is a cafe deli situated on Nether Edge Road in Sheffield, it’s just off Abbeydale Road. The deli specialises in vegan, vegetarian and gluten free cuisine as well as the usual fare of meats, cheese, breads and salads. It also stocks the most amazing cakes, all homemade and absolutely beautiful!
I’m not sure how long the deli has been there but the last time I was up at the Nether Edge part of Sheffield, which is 8 years ago now, it wasn’t there. My dad used to live just around the corner from where this cafe is situated and if it would have been there back when he lived there it would have been one of my regular haunts for sure. I don’t usually venture to that side of Sheffield often but after booking an appointment at the hairdresser’s [which is right next door and brilliant by the way!] I thought it would be nice to check out this place afterwards.
From the outside it looks really inviting, there is a modern country-esque vibe about the whole place and I knew it was going to offer me something I loved. I didn’t realise before entering that it specialised in vegetarian and vegan food but when I found that out it was already a winner in my book as there are not nearly enough vegetarian and vegan restaurants in this city. The menu for breakfast and lunch was just like reading a list of all my favourite foods and I would gladly have sampled every single non-meat option on the menu. Sadly though I wasn’t overly hungry so I decided to just have a snack in the form of some cake. That was a brilliant decision though as the cake was absolutely lovely and hands down one of the best pieces of cake I have ever eaten. I had some of the Lemon and Poppy Seed Loaf Cake and it was perfect from the lightness of the sponge to the lemoniness [not sure if that is actually a word] of the cake and the absolutely wonderful and sweet icing.
They had four different cakes on offer that day – chocolate and orange, almond and raspberry [I think], butternut squash and lemon and poppy seed. A few years ago I would have been all over the chocolate cake but now lemon flavoured cakes have taken over as my favourite with lemon and poppy seed and lemon and blueberry topping the lot. Quite an impressive thing from a girl who 3 years ago would not touch anything lemon flavoured and always gave away lemon and/or lime flavoured sweets. What I’m getting at though is that the cake was beautiful as was the coffee and don’t even get me started on how good the breakfasts looked. My mum had the English muffin with bacon, poached egg, mushrooms and chutney and it looked amazing. A perfectly poached egg, non-fatty mushrooms [my pet hate is fried mushrooms swimming in fat] and a chutney so good my mum [the chutney hater] ate all of it.
With food that good, a huge selection of things I can eat that I adore for me to sample and the very reasonable prices as well as the friendly staff I know that I will be back here again. More than likely after my next haircut but this time I’ll be having something from the breakfast or lunch menu but if they have lemon and poppy seed cake I will be having that too.
