The Throwback Tuesday weekly post is a opportunity for me to revisit the good, cheesy, forgotten or essential parts of music, film, tv and books from my childhood, the past few years or the generations/eras/works of art that have influenced my life in some way.
This week I’m going to be going all old school 90’s on you with some music and a film that not only was a big deal when I was a child but I imagine was a big deal for a lot of you guys reading this too. I’m, of course, talking about the biggest girl band ever The Spice Girls and their foray onto the big screen ‘Spiceworld’.
I’ve mentioned The Spice Girls on this blog quite a few times over the years and just how much I loved them. They burst onto the pop scene when I was 6 and from that moment I was hooked on their music and just absolutely everything about them. I think as a young girl they did have a big effect on my life not only then but even today, the whole girl power stance from the band I believe has been a big contributing factor towards my feminist views of today as they instilled in me the idea of being an independent girl from a very young age. I’m also sure that is why a lot of my generation as well have many more feminist views today and are not frightened to stand up for what they believe in.
Anyway, moving onto the music and the film. Their albums were some of the first I ever had bought for me, I could sing those tracks as good as the girls [well that all depends on how honest you want to be about my singing voice] and I was slightly convinced that I was Baby Spice, this long blonde hair of mine was made for high up ponytails. So then when the movie came out I badgered my parents for weeks to let me go to the cinema and see it. My mum ended up taking me as we all know how dads feel about girl and boy bands that their children love. It was one of the best things I’d ever seen in my life up until that point and my little face was ecstatic when we left and fully in awe during the film.
I can’t really remember all that happens in the film these days but I know I would gladly watch it again. Whether my older self would find it as enthralling is another matter but I know that I would still love it as it is The Spice Girls and let’s face it I still love them, we all do really. The film is a snapshot in time for me and like many phases that have happened throughout popular culture since the 50’s, it is one that stands out for many reasons because of how important it was.
I think our mission for the week should be to: firstly, listen to as much Spice Girls as we can and have absolutely no regret about singing along and secondly try and find the film online or on DVD and watch it to relive some classic 90’s memories.
