‘Here Today Ghost Tomorrow’ is the 4th release and brand new EP from Scotland’s The David Latto Band. The band may hail from Fife but their sound is rooted more in that of Southern USA with country influences running rife throughout the entire 4 tracks. Touring and constantly recording has got the band to this point gaining attention and good reviews along the way but does the new EP measure up as a good release to add to their back catalogue.
Well things are definitely off to a good start with the steady guitar chords and wonderful melodies that run throughout ‘We Cannot Be Friends Anymore’. The country influences are there from the off with a slight twang in the vocals and the steady rhythm that comes from the consistent drum beat which create a great base for this one. A great guitar riff that comes in just over halfway through mixes classic rock with country before taking us into the final part where the pace is picked up but things still remain on a wonderful level of calm.
On title track ‘Here Today Ghost Tomorrow’, a soft acoustic guitar strum opens proceedings before those country tinged vocals come in sitting so well against the downbeat sounds. Harmonious backing vocals and a steady beat add a bit more fullness to the track and sound. This one is a calm, flowing and quite beautiful track, expect to sway along to this wonderful rhythm and live it will create the perfect sing a long moment.
Whereas ‘Every Now And Then’ features slightly gritty vocals while the guitars gently strum along in the background, whirring towards the end of lyrics really emphasising the end of one line and the beginning of the next. Again there’s a calm atmosphere full of flowing melodies, it’s a beautifully composed love song and one I can see coming to mean a lot to a lot of people.
Closing track ‘A Long Time Coming’ opens on a folk inspired note with a banjo solo which is added to with the gentle rhythm and the sing along vocals. For me, though this is a good song I just feel that the banjo isn’t really needed and just a guitar would have sufficed. Maybe that’s just personal preference though as I’m not really a fan of the banjo. Looking past my own musical prejudices its decent song but definitely not the best on this EP.
I do think this is a good release to add to their back catalogue as it’s a really accomplished EP of great musicality mixed with well executed influences and storytelling lyrics. For someone who personally is not a massive fan of country music the way the sounds and components have been used here gives it that edge but it’s not overpowering. It works so well that it really doesn’t matter what their influences have been, it is just a very good listen.
