I’m not usually one for chick-lit fiction, I usually give up after around 3 or 4 chapters because I can never usually get into the story and let’s face it some of it is terribly written but this book exceeded my expectations, changed my mind about chick-lit completely and honestly I could not put it down at all.
The novel follows the lives of 3 characters Maddy, Robert and Ben, best friends from the age of 9 when Maddy starts at their school, they go through everything together. The book starts as Maddy is about to walk down the aisle to marry Robert, it’s clear that Maddy is also in love with her other best friend Ben and Ben is desperately in love with her and if he said just one word before she walks down the aisle she would leave Robert in an instant. We are then whisked to the very beginning, the day Maddy met Robert and Ben at primary school, its instant friendship told through the perspectives of Ben and Maddy. With trials and tribulations, the usual up’s and down’s of teenage years as well as Maddy and Robert getting together and then university which sees Maddy and Robert separated for the first time in 9 year and at the age of 21 just about to leave uni something drastic happens involving all 3 of them that could easily jeopardise and ruin all those years of friendship.
The story is addictive told wonderfully with brilliant writing throughout; you really get to know the characters feeling for them at different times throughout the book. Being able to make a connection with characters in a story is always important and when a writer pulls it off to the extent Fletcher has then it makes for a wonderful read, exactly what this is.
I fully recommend ‘You’re The One That I Want’ to absolutely everyone, fans of chick-lit will love this and I think people like me who aren’t fans will be pleasantly surprised. It’s a story which is pretty simple in premise but written so well with twists, turns and great believable personalities it really should be the one book you read this year. The ending is pretty perfect and will leave you with a smile on your face so if you ask me this is the perfect book to pick up and read this summer by the pool, on the beach, in the park or simply in the comfort of your own home.
