Every month, Mixtape Couture will be showcasing and shining a light on the talent that can be found in Sheffield. From bands to fashion brands, shops to restaurants, events to exhibitions, if it’s in Sheffield and it’s worth you knowing about then I will be letting you know. Whether you are a Sheffield resident yourself or are planning a visit one day [which I highly recommend] then hopefully this feature will help you to know where to visit, what to do and what’s going on in the Steel City.

This month, I thought it would only be fair to showcase one of my favourite pubs in Sheffield. Not only are the drinks amazing in here [seriously best cocktails in Sheffield in my opinion!] but they serve amazing food that caters for pretty much every dietary requirement as well as being tasty and locally sourced. Basically, there is not a lot you can’t love about The Old House in Sheffield.
The bar is situated in a building said to be the home of the Duke of Devonshire back in the 1800’s and that would explain it’s grand entrance and beautiful interior perfectly. The bar is spacious and whether it is a busy Friday night or a Monday lunchtime you never feel overcrowded or uncomfortable in there. Dark furniture decorates the floor while plenty of mirrors and quaint pictures litter the walls, old beer bottles and trinkets and maps are all over the place as well and to say this place feels homely is more than an understatement. It is one of those bars I could sit in all night and never feel out of place at all.
Their menu features a range of freshly made and locally sourced ingredients which matches up perfectly with a list which caters for vegetarians and those on a gluten free diet alike. It’s the perfect place for me and my mum specifically with me being a vegetarian and mum being a coeliac, we know it is somewhere we can go where we can both eat and the food is delicious, fresh, healthy and at a reasonable price. Their stance on the food they serve can simply be found on their website: “There isn’t any need to explain in detail our ideology of food and cooking. It’s simple. Everything is homemade, fresh and delicious including our award winning sausages, finger-licking burgers and truly scrumptious handmade pies!”
Along with this, the bar has a range of different nights on offer from Friday’s being Pie day, where you can have any pie and peas for just £5 all day to Gin Club Thursdays where you get a free mixer with any gin and with over 50 different types of gin on offer there is plenty to choose from.
To back up that clear love of gin, they also have a monthly gin night with guest speakers from gin distilleries, learning about the history of gin and this month a night all about gin infusions with three different infusions to try. As well as this, there are also gin schools with basic classes starting at £15 and more advanced classes at £20 where you’ll learn about gin and cocktails as well as making your own cocktail. Plus, there are cocktail classes and again there are two price points and it’s all about a mixture of learning and cocktail tasting.
As you might expect with nights dedicated to cocktails and gin, there are plenty of spirits on offer and drinks really are their speciality and what they pride themselves on. With a range of foreign and local beers on tap and bottled, plenty of choice wines and a cocktail list that would rival many bigger bars this really is the perfect place not only for cocktail lovers but beer fans and those just looking for something a little different to your usual drinks menu.
I would list all the reasons here why I love The Old House but I’m pretty sure I already have above and I’m not just talking about those pictures of some of the meals I’ve enjoyed there in the past. The food, the drinks, the decor, the atmosphere and the friendly staff are all features every great bar should have and it is what The Old House has in absolute abundance. When you see the place and experience it for yourself you instantly understand why it is a favourite of many Sheffield residents and why it has won many awards over its years from local magazine Exposed awarding it ‘Best Bar in Sheffield’ to Observer Food Monthly awarding it the title of ‘Top 10 Places to Eat in the UK’ to winning the National Food Award for ‘Best Hand-Made Pub Sausages’, plenty of plaudits well deserved in my opinion.
If you are wanting a nice bar to drink, eat, socialise or just chill out at in Sheffield, then definitely head to The Old House, I would recommend it to absolutely everyone and you my blog readers are absolutely no exception to that.
