Food Review: Smoke Barbeque, Sheffield

A couple of weeks ago, me and the boyfriend went to check out one of the more recently opened food offerings in Sheffield, Smoke Barbecue. Despite its clear hints at a menu full of meat there was a couple of veggie options on the menu so it ended up being a pretty perfect place for both of us to eat. We went on a Tuesday night and there was a fair few customers for traditionally the quietest night of the week. With quick service food and drink wise, we were seated and chose our drinks. As a non beer drinker, I was pleased to see a) some amazing ciders on the drinks menu and b) their cocktails menu is very impressive [whiskey sour, yes please!]. I opted for the Ginger Jeremiah Weed while my beer loving partner opted for a 1/2 pint of the Smoke American Red.

When it came to food choices, the menu is not exactly vast, you can check it out here, however all portion sizes are more than genorous, I’m not sure if they have ever sold a dessert with how stuffed you are after the mains. The veggie options were a chilli with chips which sounded lovely or the sweet potato and corn burger that I opted for. The patty was huge and packed full of corn and plenty of flavour, I was worried with the place being so meat-orientated that the veggie options would be lacking in any sort of flavour but that was not the case at all. It’s a veggie burger I would definitely recommend. Served on a gorgeous soft white bun with a slice of tomato and lettuce, it was lovely. It also came with a huge portion of chips which were twice cooked and beautiful, tomato sauce and a gherkin, props to the chefs for not putting it on my burger as I’m not a gherkin fan.

The Hot House Link Sausage pit plate was the choice of my boyfriend and I’m pretty sure by the look on his face he enjoyed his meal. The pit plates come with a choice of pulled pork, barbecue chicken, turkey leg or the sausage as well as chips and a side of your choice. There is an extensive list of sides from salad to sweet potato mash, coleslaw to mac and cheese. Though it was the smoked pit beans that were chosen and they were very nice.

After the very decent sized mains, we opted out of dessert which never usually happens for me. Coming to just under £30 for a good meal each and a drink is pretty reasonable for the quality and size of food on offer. It may not have the most extensive menu out there but it is definitely a place worth visiting if you are a meat eater and want to try their offerings or for vegetarians there is most definitely something tasty you can have. A great addition to the foodie part of Sheffield’s high street.
