Black Skater Dress – ASOS / Dogtooth Blazer – Dorothy Perkins / Burgundy Biker Boots – New Look / Black Bag – Primark / Burgundy Hat – Topshop / Socks – George at ASDA / Watch – Avon
My first outfit post of 2015 and I’m glad to be back with some more awkward poses for you all. Since my last outfit post I’ve had a haircut from my super long and annoying hair before to a shorter, blunt long bob which I absolutely adore and it is so much easier to look after my hair at this length let me tell you. Also, I’ve added a lot of new pieces to my wardrobe, mainly basics and pieces that I’ve been after for long time to create a versatile and almost capsule wardrobe.
One of the first new pieces that I’m featuring is this dress from ASOS which my boyfriend bought me for Christmas and what I wore recently for a meal out for my mum’s birthday. I’m still completely surprised by how well he’s done at picking out clothing for me especially as I’m very picky when it comes to what clothes I wear but he’s done well here. The dress is a typical skater style and even though it looks like just a basic black dress the high neckline and crossover back with cut out pieces adds some great interest to this piece. It’s been a long time since I wore anything high necked but in the space of a week this present and a dress I’d bought myself in the sales, both with a high neckline, were added to my wardrobe. I really love the neckline, surprisingly as I didn’t know if it was something I could easily pull off, but with my shorter hair I actually think it works really well and I’m now on the lookout for more high necked dresses to buy.
The plain black of the dress obviously needed some pattern added to it and this came from my now pretty old but one of my favourite checked blazers. The oversized fit of the jacket against the more structured fit of the dress is something I love as I plan on spending more time this year playing around with cuts and fits of clothing. My burgundy biker boots and burgundy hat add some much needed colour to this outfit with one of my favourite winter shades. I may only have paired the dress with nude tights and small socks for the photos but let me tell you when I left the house I wore thick knee high socks, this January has been way too cold to have too much leg on show.
I love this outfit and I think if it has taught me anything it is that I can buy more basic and simple pieces and dress them up or add interest to them with other pieces or accessories rather than always buying more statement pieces. I usually shy away from plain coloured dresses because I feel like they lack interest but this dress has more than taught me otherwise. Maybe this will be the start of a change of direction when it comes to my shopping habits.
