Every month, Mixtape Couture will be showcasing and shining a light on the talent that can be found in Sheffield. From bands to fashion brands, shops to restaurants, events to exhibitions, if it’s in Sheffield and it’s worth you knowing about then I will be letting you know. Whether you are a Sheffield resident yourself or are planning a visit one day [which I highly recommend] then hopefully this feature will help you to know where to visit, what to do and what’s going on in the Steel City.
This month, I’m going to feature one of my favourite places to eat in the city. It is somewhere I have mentioned a lot and I’ve reviewed them 3 times [yeah I love their food!] but everytime I’ve eaten there, which is a lot, they have never disappointed creating wonderful homemade fare that is filling and delicious all for a very reasonable price. This month, I’m bringing you my favourite, Homemade by Thelma’s.
With a great menu of fresh ingredients these guys truly cater for all with many of the dishes being vegetarian and a lot being gluten free or vegan or with the option to make them as such. The lovely staff are always so welcoming and willing to cater for all making for a great eating experience and a wonderful atmosphere. Whether it is a food allergy or just a specific preference, if you are after somewhere that is willing to make changes to its menu and talk you through what they can substitute then this is the place for you to eat.
On my many visits there I’ve had everything from the most amazing lemon and poppy seed loaf cake ever to a beautiful and utterly mouthwatering mezze board of vegetarian goodness, something which has fast become my favourite meal and my go to thing to order. Each day there are a variety of salads on offer from cous cous based ones to chickpeas or spinach being the main feature, every single one is full of complimenting ingredients and completely filling on their own. These salads you can team with some of the meals on the menu and the specials on the board. The vegetarian mezze board I usually have lets you choose two salads which go along with the pitta, houmous, olives, stuffed vine leaves and any other additions you want to make the meal for example adding Halloumi like I always do. With a lunch menu that features everything from soups to sandwiches and a breakfast menu packed with everything from a cooked breakfast to porridge, poached eggs and a Sheffield rarebit made with locally sourced ingredients, there is plenty to choose from whether you want a light lunch or a filling meal.
The cafe also has a burger and shake night every Wednesday night which is something I am desperate to go to and try out the food on offer. I’m also wanting to go to a Bistro night at Homemade by Thelma’s too, they hold one every Friday night and with the looks of the menu every single week it is something I have to visit. The quality of food looks utterly stunning and if it is anything like the quality from their daytime menus then this will be something to check out. With quiz nights and their own deli, these guys are becoming a true staple of not only the Nether Edge community but of the Sheffield food scene at large and I will personally always recommend it to everyone for its great food and atmosphere.
