Sheffield Showcase #15: Peddler Market

Every month, Mixtape Couture will be showcasing and shining a light on the talent that can be found in Sheffield. From bands to fashion brands, shops to restaurants, events to exhibitions, if it’s in Sheffield and it’s worth you knowing about then I will be letting you know. Whether you are a Sheffield resident yourself or are planning a visit one day [which I highly recommend] then hopefully this feature will help you to know where to visit, what to do and what’s going on in the Steel City.

Sheffield has always been a city full of culture from music to theatre, film to fashion, there is always plenty going on here whether it is obvious or a hidden gem. A more recent cultural foray comes from the wonderful Peddler Market, where food, music and art come together with a sense of community and fun creating a really exciting night market held on the first weekend of every other month.

Peddler started out only quite recently but has already become popular in the city offering people new experiences to try in the evenings and running late into the night for free entry in the middle of the town centre. The Markets are run by Ben Smith, Jordan Roberts and Heather Gilberthorpe, who between them all have a wealth of experience in events, marketing and producing good food. All experience which points to it becoming a great event which is truly has over the last few months.

Taking place in Sheffield’s Cultural Quarter on Arundel Street and occupies some of the building, 156 Arundel Street, it is slap bang in the centre of town making it accessible for all whether you are going here before a night out, coming down after work or making the journey into the city especially. The market takes place down the length of the street with the road being cordoned off and marquees and vans offering plenty of gorgeous fare taking residence there instead. It is a great industrial setting laid out well and is perfect to stroll around for an hour or two especially in the good weather.

The market offers a good range of food with sellers coming to Sheffield from all over as well as having some local businesses show up too. There is veggie and vegan options and a multitude of cuisines from Italian to Japanese, Moroccan to American; there really is something for everyone here which makes choosing what you want to eat quite bloody difficult. There is not only the savoury stuff like hot dogs, pizzas and burgers either, there is also sweet crepes, ice cream and Depot Bakery offering everything from croissants and coffee to brownies and cake.

Even if you are not after some food [which quite frankly would be odd if you weren’t at least tempted] there are plenty of other things to do. From pop up bars, selling everything from local beers to great wines, a cocktail stand, some great art being showcased inside 156 from local artists [a lot of which is for sale at very reasonable prices] and some great music going on from DJ’s and sometimes live acts too.

So with all that information in mind, I can imagine if you have not already experience Peddler before that you want to attend the next market. Well you’ve just missed the last one as it was on 3rd/4th July but fear not, there will be another market around September time and for any more info or special one off events then keep your eyes on their social media accounts.

Peddler Market is located on Arundel Street, Sheffield every two months.
