Every month, Mixtape Couture will be showcasing and shining a light on the talent that can be found in Sheffield. From bands to fashion brands, shops to restaurants, events to exhibitions, if it’s in Sheffield and it’s worth you knowing about then I will be letting you know. Whether you are a Sheffield resident yourself or are planning a visit one day [which I highly recommend] then hopefully this feature will help you to know where to visit, what to do and what’s going on in the Steel City.
This month, I’m bringing to you a bar and kitchen in Sheffield city centre that has recently celebrated its first birthday and what a first year it has been for Anchorage. The craft beer and cocktails bar with an East Coast kitchen upstairs has received countless good reviews, including this one by myself from last Septemeber, consistantly gaining fans and having a great food and drinks menu. It is no wonder that Anchorage have survived and thrived during the first year and I can only see many more great years to come for this place.
Being open for at least 12 hours a day gives this place so much flexibility in its operation and cliental, something a lot of other places struggle with because of more rigid opening times. Open for lunch and dinner, after work drinks and late night cocktails, this is the place to go for a good time with your friends, a date night with your partner or a meal with the parents. The atmosphere in the restaurant is wonderful and relaxed while downstairs in the bar even on a Saturday night it is relaxed and not too mad or formal. It is the type of place I like to go on a Saturday night, somewhere I don’t feel surrounded or uncomfortable, you can just enjoy yourself.
The bar does have a great range of cocktails, featuring everything from your standard stuff with a twist to the more experimental featuring an array of spirits from the packed wall of bottles behind the bar. When it comes to beer this is one of the places to be in Sheffield for a great selection, and for a city that is rammed full of places with great beer selections that really is saying something. With everything from the more well known craft beers to the more rare labels, breweries and names, this really is a place that a beer drinker and a cocktail lover can spend many hours in getting acquainted with the selection on offer.

When it comes to the restaurant, it is a wonderful decor and situated upstairs gives you a good view of one of the newer developments in the city as well as a bit of privacy so that sitting by the windows doesn’t invite stares from passers-by. Disappointingly I’ve only actually been to the restaurant once, last year when it opened, and I know that I need to go back, I’m annoyed with myself for not going back sooner because the food that I had that night was delicious and wonderful.
The East Coast influence is rife throughout the menu from the emphasis on fresh lobster, well cooked steaks and fried chicken to the stunning Mac n Cheese burger I had when I was there. The full menu contains everything from starters to mains and desserts, grills, Sunday roast and brunch and everything with that little East Coast twist to it including the Sunday roasts. There really is something for everyone here from the meat lover to the fish lover and the veggie as well as the sweet toothed dessert fiend.
But for those looking for a quick lunch, there is the deli menu which offers everything from ramen to ribs, grilled cheese and philly steak sandwiches as well as meat and cheese boards. This surely does make it a perfect place for a bite to eat for lunch as well as the meal when you have more time on your hands.
I can’t recommend this place enough, with great food and a huge selection of drinks, this place is perfect for all and is by far one of the best places to go in Sheffield. If you haven’t been yet, then get yourselves over there at the earliest opportunity so that you don’t miss out on this amazing gem of Sheffield’s food and drink industry.
