Fashion: Winter Wardrobe Preparation

Winter Wardrobe

It’s that time of year again. The time where we need to prepare our wardrobe for the harshest and most trying of seasons, winter. With winter well and truly on its way, the wool, the layers, the thicker fabrics, the warm accessories and sensible shoes all take over our wardrobes and rightly so but just how exactly is the best way to prepare for winter.

Boots: Boots are my best friend from October until April and owning just as many pairs as I do, it means I can pick pairs to work well with outfits instead of opting for the typical sensible black pair. From my cherry red Doc Martens to my leopard print chelsea boots, I have a mix of styles, fabrics and colours on offer because I was always told to invest in good coats and boots and I will forever take this to heart, especially when I live in the UK.

Coats: Over the years I have come to appreciate the need for a good coat. A classic cut in a strong yet complimentary colour can last you for years and is an investment worth making. Having a good coat is a necessity for winter and as I said before, I believe you should spend more on a coat as you truly do get what you pay for. That being said over the past year or so I’ve managed to get some vintage coat bargains. A harrington jacket for around £10, a navy trench for £14 and a army style parka for £18. All perfectly added to my collection, are of the best condition and will last me for years to come.

Knitwear: Ask anyone, I am all about the knitwear come autumn/winter. The more snuggly the jumper or cardigan, the better in my opinion. I’ve collected an array of jumpers of the years from my beloved thick knit mustard number to the thinner, palm tree print jumper. In the season of cold days, layering up with a jumper over a shirt or dress is perfect for added warmth or pairing it on its own with jeans and boots is also a classic look that will also keep you warm. H&M sells some of my favourite jumpers so if you are on the lookout for some new jumpers this year, head there.

Jeans and Hosiery: Not usually lumped together but always found on the same part of your body, collecting good pairs of jeans, thick tights and long socks are essential for winter. I’m not a massive jeans fan, I appreciate a well fitting pair but I have no patience for jeans shopping. Luckily, New Look sells great skinny jeans that fit my long legs perfectly taking the stress out of jeans shopping.
As a tights fan though, I have many a colour to jazz up outfits with. Tights may not be comfortable and winter may be dull but nothing puts a smile on my face more than wearing my orange, mustard or pink tights on a grey day. eBay is the best place for coloured tights though make sure you look for thicker deniers, as most coloured tights range from 20-80 in denier which are no good for the depths of winter. If coloured tights aren’t your thing, the super thick black tights found all over the high street are winter saviours for the days when you want to wear dresses, skirts or shorts.

Accessories: In my opinion, winter has better accessories than summer. Thick woolly scarves, mittens or gloves and awesome bobble hats? Yes please! I have a huge selection of winter accessories ready and waiting for the cold to arrive which have served me well over the years. I find bright contrasting colours and quirky designs make for the best winter accessories, again just adding that little bit of fun to the grey days of winter.
