Whether you are a Sheffield resident yourself or are planning a visit one day [which I highly recommend] then hopefully this feature will help you to know where to visit, what to do and what’s going on in the Steel City.
This month, I bring you something that I love dearly: gin. Not just any gin though, Sir Robin of Locksley Gin. The gin that has fast become my favourite of the lot, and there is a lot out there, is made in my very city and found in the best pubs of this city too. If you haven’t tried this one yet then make sure you do because its wonderful flavours makes for a wonderful gin to use with cocktails, in a classic G&T or to sip on its own.

After finding out about the gin through a visit to The Bath Hotel many months back, this offering soon became my gin tipple of choice. The botancials used within in it create a great and unique flavour giving it a sweetness that hits that middle ground perfectly making this an ideal sipping gin, not something that is often true from many other blends and names around. With the likes of elderflowers, pinkgrapefruit, dandelion and citrus all found throughout it gives a really interesting taste that does toe that line between London Dry and the sometimes overpowering sweetness of an Old Tom.
It took 8 months for the recipe for the gin to be perfected but all that time and experimentation paid off to create a craft gin that is distinct in taste. These guys became Sheffield’s first gin as soon as they started out and even though at the moment they don’t distill in Sheffield, all distribution comes from here. Locksley will be the first gin to start producing in Sheffield as well when things from distilling get finished and set up next year.

Having met the owner and founder of Locksley recently at a tasting night at The Bath, I learnt a lot about gin, exactly how this gin can be used and how it was made and conceived and I saw the sheer passion behind the brand and the gin. Teaming up with the likes of Thornbridge got this gin out to a number of pubs in Sheffield and has seen the gin grow in popularity becoming the main choice of many wanting to order a G&T in the city. It is a local success story that really is winning over the locals and becoming a much loved cornerstone of Sheffield drink and culture.
If you’ve yet to give the gin a try, then make sure that you go out there and find some. Currently it is stocked at quite a few bars in the city including all the Thornbridge pubs such as The Bath Hotel, The Greystones, The Hallamshire House etc. It is also stocked in quite a few places all over the country so make sure to look out for it if you can. Otherwise, you can buy a bottle of the gin at a number of wine and spirits retailers across Sheffield.
