Interview: Audio Impulse

Today, I’m bringing you some new music from Philadelphia alt-rockers Audio Impulse. This four piece band was born when 2 local bands called it a day, Nate and Barry decided to start writing music together and were soon on the look out to complete their band line up. Since then, the band have been together creating EP’s like 2014’s ‘Plug In & Tune Out’ and their recently released ‘Straight Shot’ EP.

Creating music straight from the heart has seen these guys succeed in gaining some loyal fans and creating music they are truly passionate about playing live.

I recently caught up with the guys to find out more about them, their brand new release and what 2016 has in store for them.

Hey guys, could you introduce us to yourselves and your sound?

Hey, thanks for taking the time to do this feature with us! We’re Audio Impulse a hard rock/pop punk four piece based out of the city of brotherly love Philadelphia, PA! Fronted by Barry on vocals & guitar, Nate on lead guitar & vocals, Pat on Bass, and Freeman on drums.

I think the best way to describe our sound is cross between Foo Fighters and Taking Back Sunday. We have a high energy, raw rock sound with a tasteful, or so we like to think, pop accessibility. If it’s easier just to listen to get an idea of our sound you can check us out at our official website, as well as all the major social media outlets Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc.

Why did you decide to start a band and how did you meet?

Nate, Barry, and I met, more years ago than I care to admit, in college. Nate and Barry actually started the band more as a side project & jam session between the two of them. They had written roughly 5-6 songs and decided they wanted to take the project to the next level and go with a full band. I was approached to start writing bass parts and we all started looking for a drummer to round out the band. We were fortunate to find Freeman on Craigslist and were so impressed with his initial tryout that we didn’t look any further after that. That’s the abridged version of how Audio Impulse came to be as it is today.

Who would you say are your biggest musical inspirations/influences?

We pull inspiration from a lot of different bands. The biggest influences come from the 90’s grunge and alt rock bands, the late 90’s/early 2000s punk bands, and classic rock bands. We draw from modern bands like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, The Subways, and Jimmy Eat World to the classics like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Skynyrd.

You’re from Philadelphia in the US, how would you describe the music scene there?

Philly has always had a solid music scene, and it’s a city we’re proud to call home. It’s been rated by some lists as one of the top ten scenes and one of the top up and coming scenes in the US. The bands here are always like one big, occasionally dysfunctional, family. We all know each other from playing around, we’re generally pretty happy to help each other out trading shows or getting another band’s back in an emergency. It’s a really cool city to be a part of the music scene and an exciting time to be performing new & original music in Philly.

You released your debut album in 2014, how was the reaction to that release?

The reviews have been mainly positive. We submitted it for review through the Akademia Music Awards and were fortunate to have won best new hard rock album in November of 2015. We also had 12 day run on Gashouse Radio’s Band v. Band segment January of 2015 and that lead to ‘Plug In & Tune Out’ being Gashouse’s first retired champion of 2015.

How do you approach writing and recording music?

We generally approach writing a song around a riff or a melody one of us has stuck in our heads when we show up to the practice space. We kind of work to build from that central idea, it sounds cliché, but we let the music take us to where it wants to go or what feels right for that piece. Once we’re satisfied with where a song is at, we start prepping for recording by getting down to a metronome, locking all our parts in place and really tightening up the performance. After that we take to our producer, he gives his input, we nail everything down from there, and boom! The rest is history.

Finally, what are your plans for the rest of 2016?

We have a busy year planned for 2016. On March 4th we’re releasing our second studio release a four track EP ‘Straight Shot’.

We currently working on shooting a second music video in support of ‘Straight Shot’. We don’t have any full tours planned for this year, but we’ll definitely be playing out over the east coast in support of the EP. We’re also working on putting out a few singles later in the year, as well as, another studio compilation towards the tail end of 2016.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, hope we hear from you again soon!
