Today, I’m bringing you some new music from …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead frontman Conrad Keely. After released his debut solo album back in January entitled ‘Original Machines’, he is now bringing us to video for the latest single to be taken from that release.
The single, entitled ‘Engines of the Dark’, is a lilting classic from the first chords as guitar strums ebb and flow around the padding drum sounds, rich piano notes and strong yet harmonious vocals. It’s a brilliant song in its delivery portraying emotion but not too much so that it becomes the over-riding theme of this one. Lyrically, this is very good and will surely become a song that people latch onto as they relate to the story being told here. Great melodies and grounding rhythms really have created a solid and steady base for this song to work from, growing wonderfully in many directions especially with those gritty vocals.
As singer and co-founder of the successful band he has been with for so long, striking out on his own could have been a risky idea. However, his debut solo album was met with great words upon its release with Q magazine calling it; “a brilliant odyssey through the eclectic backwaters of Keely’s imagination”
The songs on the album were written on Keely’s travels, mostly through Cambodia, where he currently resides. After being in …Trail of the Dead for 20 years, Conrad was encouraged by fellow bandmate Autry Fulbright to record and release a selection of his solo material. And that is what he did, after spending more time playing solo shows after moving to Cambodia it seemed like the natural progression for him.
