Food Review: Rags Restaurant, Bridlington

Recently, me and my boyfriend went across to Bridlington for his birthday, making sure we had a nice place to eat while there I booked a table at Rags Restaurant a couple of weeks before. The restaurant is situated on the seafront, along with a hotel and bar in the same building, and is clearly one of the celebrated highlights of Bridlington’s food scene. I’m glad we booked a table beforehand as the restuarant got quite busy on the Saturday night, full of couples, birthday meals and families enjoying the great food with a view over the sea.

On arrival, we were shown upstairs to the private restaurant and seated by the window. Straight away we checked out the menu, picking drinks and food. I must admit service was slow throughout the entire meal so it was a good 10 minutes before we were asked for our drinks order and another 5-10 before our food order was taken. We opted for a starter and a main each, skipping dessert on this occasion and even if I would have wanted it I would never have fitted it in because I was too full anyway.

For starter, I opted for the soup of the day which was tomato, served with warm ciabatta rolls and butter. The rolls warmed up were perfect to dip into the soup and the soup itself was utterly perfect. The most delicious and wonderful tomato soup I’ve ever had. The soup was thick and bursting with flavour from the sweetness of tomatoes to the earthiness and spiciness of herbs. Buried within the soup was a cheese topped piece of bread, soft from being submerged in soup and with a strong cheddar that cut through the sweetness wonderfully. Seriously, order the soup.

My boyfriend opted for the Pork Belly with Black Pudding and Apple Gravy. I’ve never seen him eat a meal so quick in his life, he’d finished his plate before I’d even started and you could tell by the smile on his face that he more than enjoyed it. As a fan of both pork and black pudding, it was basically his perfect meal and the perfectly crispy crackling being the cherry on top of the already amazing cake.

For mains, I opted for the Spiced Bean Burger which was served with cheese, guacamole and onion rings with chips, sweetcorn relish and gherkins on the side. The burger was honestly huge, I didn’t even manage half of it before I was full and that wasn’t because it wasn’t delicious because it really was. The guacamole was creamy and utterly delicious and worked well at cooling down the spiciness of the bean burger patty which was a little too spicy for me but that is just personal preference. The chips though were an utter highlight, absolutely perfectly cooked as they were lovely and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The sweetcorn relish was nice with a good flavour, a nice addition to the plate but it wasn’t the best thing there either.

But it was the Steak Pie with Chips and Mushy Peas that my boyfriend opted for and he again absolutely loved it. The steak inside the pie was great, of a really good quality and there was plenty there making it a really great sized portion for the price. The meat had been marinated in a rich guinness gravy that added to the heartiness of the meal and the rich flavour of the meat. Again, the chips were great exactly like mine, cooked to perfection and the mushy peas looked good ones, thick and full of flavour. It was also served with gravy which was just the right consistency, tasty and clearly worked well with the meal as a whole.

Starters, mains and drinks all were very reasonably priced and like I said before the food was absolutely delicious. I would definitely go back the next time I was in Bridlington and would recommend it to everyone for the great food and reasonable prices as well as the great location. Service was slow and that is a downside to the restaurant but I’m hoping it was just because the restaurant was busy, however it wouldn’t put me off visiting there again at all. If you are in Bridlington soon, check this place out for sure.
